Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Turning the Page with the Passage of Women’s Reservation Bill

New Delhi, 6 December 2023:   In a historic stride towards gender equality and inclusive representation, the nation celebrates the successful passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill. This legislative milestone not only shatters the glass ceiling but also turns the page in the 27 years fight for women’s inclusivity and empowerment in Indian politics.   To mark the impact of this important bill, today well- known names from the social and political circle attended a press conference at Press Club of India New Delhi. The prominent names from the dais are as follows:   Ranjana Kumrai,Director of the Centre for Social Research in Delhi and chairwoman of Women Power Connect; Padmini Kumar,Eminenet Social worker; Geeta Shroff, a well-known name that is synonym of ‘Social Work’ in the Southern part of Gujarat; Lora Prabhu,Director and co-founder of CEQUIN;Dr Soumya Ranganathan & Rekha Mody, prominent social worker & art curator.   The Women’s Reservation Bill, allocating one-third of parliamentary seats to women, reflects a transformative vision for the political landscape of India. The tireless efforts and advocacy of individuals, lawmakers and women’s organizations have culminated in this crucial legislation.   However, while the Women’s Reservation Bill focuses on parliamentary seats, we urge the government to consider a parallel initiative to increase women’s representation in the state assemblies as well. To maximize the efficacy of the legislation, women’s engagement and visibility in politics must be increased. This would bring about stability to the political landscape and enhance the integrity of the democratic process since women are less prone to political maneuvering and often stay loyal to their parties.   While lauding the passage of the bill, we also recognize that its true impact lies in effective implementation. Ultimately, the success of this legislation depends on the collective commitment of all political parties. Hence, we call upon every party to honor the Women’s Reservation Bill in its letter and spirit.   As the ink dries on the momentous bill, we extend our heartfelt commendation to the government for the passage of the bill. Now, with the groundwork laid, we pivot towards a resolute call for the effective implementation of this transformative legislation. It is not just a law; it’s a promise for an equitable future.   Let us unite in this groundbreaking moment to ensure that the Women’s Reservation Bill is not merely a legal provision but a catalyst for unleashing the full potential of the women leaders across the nation.
